London-based Yukai Du’s wonderful illustrations explore our dependence on technology

Date
8 October 2015

Illustrator Yukai Du is originally from China but now resides in London after graduating from Central Saint Martins last year. Her illustrations, gifs and animations have a grittiness about them and it’s clear she’s been influenced by her time in the city as London bus stops, the underground and other subtle snapshots of the capital weave their way into her work. But technology and our dependance on it is also a recurring theme, with stories about mobile phones, treadmills and the digital revolution all featuring in Yukai’s domestic, everyday worlds that have a surreal edge. When combined with Yukai’s textured style, it’s a lovely contrast between the analogue and the digital in her well-considered tales.
