Latvian illustrator Zane Zlemeša's delicately painted drawings
Latvian illustrator Zane Zlemeša’s delicately painted drawings are pieces you can spend a long time gazing at. Layered, textured, detailed, her illustrations are individually characteristic, whether they are depicting an interior, a landscape or an individual.
This range of work displayed is a selection of Zane’s personal work but also a sneak peek at a collection of works she will be publishing in a book during 2017 for champions of illustration, kuš! The publication, as these pieces hint at, “will be a comic book about city life, relationships, gambling, museums and art,” says Zane. Despite this being quite a broad selection of topics to discuss, once interpreted in Zane’s endearing but considered style we predict the topics will interweave seamlessly.
Throughout Zane’s work a continuous colour palette of monochrome shades is regularly present. However these pieces are never just simple black and white drawings. Zane applies a mixture of black and a misty or harsh grey to differentiate between walls, floors, desks, books, whatever is necessary. Therefore, when the illustrator does decide to apply colour, the choice is of a superlative decision, a contrasting light pink or royal blue, in Zane’s illustrational brushstrokes so that they appear natural to the image.
