Zoe Kao and Huang Wun-Siang find inspiration in the uncertainty of the design process

“The word ‘maybe’ carries a sense of uncertainty and yet it has the potential of limitless possibilities,” says designer Zoe Kao. “We titled this exhibition Maybe because it captures the state of mind many undergraduates face when transitioning from school to society.” Zoe worked with Huang Wun-Siang, a fellow student, to conceive this concept for the identity of the end of year show at Taiwan Tech University. The simple and graphic-led identity was used across billboards and printed materials that promoted the show.

The designers chose three paper types to introduce accent colours to the identity and the walls (introduced as a visual metaphor for the challenges the students will face in the future) have been printed with a deliberately thick layer of ink to enhance their presence. “Our design alludes to a change in frame – from the front of the wall, to the side, and finally to the back. This symbolises the design workflow: defining problems, foreseeing the problems, and finally solving the problems. Only when we press forward, and pass these walls can we see the whole picture, which makes a ‘maybe’ into an ‘absolute,’” say the designers.
