Inventory Studio
Guest Posting 15 June – 19 June 2009
Inventory Studio was founded in January 2008 by Robert Boon and David Lane.
Their portfolio includes book design, record covers, exhibition graphics, branding and identity, editorial design, packaging, website design, advertising and occasional bursts of helium karaoke.
What have you got planned this week?
D: Going to be in the studio working on various projects, going to some shows and the Gossip new album launch, oh and watching cricket a lot.
R: It’s a busy week for us in the studio, we have projects starting, in development and due for sign off. I’m also visiting a friend’s exhibition and customizing some shoes for Basement Jaxx.
What do your parents think you do?
D: I think they both know what i do.
R: They used to think that I made artworks and now they understand the importance, and extent, of the restrictions in client briefs.
Who do you look like?
D: Roman Abramovich apparently.
R: Most recently I’ve been told Mark Ronson.
What’s your favourite sense?
D: Common, tried to avoid the pun but walked straight in to the trap, sorry.
R: Probably hearing. On receiving a compliment on his illustration a friend once said, “Yeah thanks, but we still ain’t in a band”.
Tell us something people don’t know about you…
D: I like to listen to the shipping forecast before going to sleep.
R: I passed a Mensa entry exam at 15. I’ve cut my own hair since I was 17.
Did your education count?
D: Yes very much so but for me it was about the people I met and what I learnt from them rather than the qualifications i received.
R: Of course. I enjoy learning and really think there’s something to learn from everyone. Other people are a fantastic source of knowledge as they can not only tell you facts but also their opinions/interpretations and for me (especially as a designer) perception is more important than truth.
What word can’t you spell?
D: I would love to only spell one word wrong but unfortunately i spell hundreds wrong.
R: Phonetics/noises are always tricky.
Tell us a good fact
D: The average person laughs 10 times a day, which dosen’t seem very much to me.
R: Earth is the only planet not named after a god. Make of that what you will.
What’s Next?
D: Carry on with the studio for a while then move away somewhere I can spend all day making dinner and then spend the evening eating it.
R: Moving house, building the studio and updating my 5yr plan.
What’’s your ‘Plan B’?
D: I don’t normally make plan B’s. If plan A fails, I just have a little sulk and then get on and form a new one.
R: There isn’t one. Having a Plan B suggests that we couldn’t recover from a set back and as Darwin said “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.”
