1. Nicertuesdays-march-1323

Next up in our talks from the prank-themed Nicer Tuesdays is Rebecca Broomfield of Bray Leino, an integrated communications group who worked on a massive April Fools’ stunt for Virgin Atlantic last year. Admitting that 1 April was a time for brands either “to express their personality, or pretend they have one,” she gave us a potted history of Virgin’s weird and wonderful offerings over the years. She then explained how the glass-bottomed plane stunt came about, and how simplicity, visual appeal and letting one newspaper in on the secret was the key to its success.

  2. Nicertuesdays-march-1287

First up in our prank-themed Nicer Tuesdays talks is Katrin Baumgarten, senior interaction designer at Hirsch & Mann. Katrin spoke to us about the agency’s work for Red Stripe tripping out an east London corner shop to become a full-blown musical instrument. She explained that although it was an amazing brief both time and money were tight, and the challenge came in creating the magic, which meant “hiding as much of the technology as you possibly can.” She also revealed that because of various practical and legal considerations the special effects could not be automatically triggered, and so she and her team holed-up hidden away in the shop for the duration to help create the experience.

  3. Nicertuesdays-march-1373

Held just a week before April Fools’ Day, last night’s Nicer Tuesdays supported by Park Communications was all about pranks and hoaxes. Four speakers with very different stories to tell took to the stage at our new venue the Protein Space to regale us with tales of tomfoolery.

  4. Nicertuesdays-feb-4220

Next up in our Nicer Tuesdays magazine-themed talks is editor of The Independent Magazine Will Dean. Will spoke to us about the titles which have influenced his approach to the all-important cover decisions, referencing Bloomberg Businessweek‘s creative director Richard Turley for his wholly unique approach. He showed the audience some of his favourite covers, one of which was for the royal christening. “I managed to convince them that the best way for us to cover the royal christening was to hire the country’s best Kate Middleton lookalike, get a baby, and put them both in haute couture dresses…” The resulting image is impressive, to say the least. “I mean, I think we got away with it” he laughed. Will also revealed the dissatisfaction that comes from working on a weekly supplement – “the very fast turnaround means that arguably you’re never really happy with what you end up with” – and suggested that it’s this dissatisfaction which drives the progression of any publication.

Next up in our Nicer Tuesdays magazine-themed talks is founder and editor-in-chief of Riposte Danielle Pender. Danielle told us how she wanted to provide an alternative to the one-sided, image-obsessed focus of mainstream women’s media. “Even the more reputable magazine portray images of womanhood that are entirely unrealistic” she said, referencing the heavy-handed Photoshop applied to most cover stars. She explained how this content-over-image approach influenced the brilliant design of the magazine, of which the front cover is dominated by text, while the back features the image. “Apparently we missed out a big opportunity for advertising by putting a photo on the back. If you can’t play around with format on your first venture into publishing, though, when can you?”

At last month’s Nicer Tuesdays supported by Park Communications we were celebrating all things print and were delighted to be joined by Bruno Bayley of Vice who talked us through the title’s history and examined why the publication remains a core part of an expanding media empire. You can watch his talk above to get some real insights into the way this much talked-about but often misunderstood publication operates.

  7. Nicertuesdays-feb-4094

The first in our talks from February’s magazine themed Nicer Tuesdays is longtime art director of Wired UK Andrew Diprose, who gave a fascinating insight into the process of designing for the world’s leading science, culture and technology magazine, with their diverse range of content and inimitable covers. He also spoke brilliantly about the importance of commissioning, and the role a magazine plays for the illustrators and photographers featured in it.

From working with Wiley to chopping up vinyl, Luke’s talk was the perfect combination of humour and honesty, touching on both the great and the more challenging aspects of working in this area.

She spoke about how the series was inspired by the weird and wonderful goings-on in the house she was living in at the time and explained why lo-fi improvisation was very much the order of the day.

  11. List

At last month’s Nicer Tuesdays supported by Park Communications, we heard from four speakers who work in various ways in and around the music industry, But when it came to being immersed in that world, photographer Dan Wilton took the biscuit. He spoke about his experiences on tour with Californian band (and brothers) The Bots, whose European tour he tagged along on and created a brilliant zine documenting what he saw. From the world’s biggest pig museum to hiding cuddly toys in trees as a means of taunting the brother’s mum, Dan spoke with wit and passion about how he gently manipulates situations to get the most interesting and unusual shots possible.
