Things

Every week we review the best of what drops through our letterbox and the colossally kind folk who sent them. Join the fun via Things, It’s Nice That, 21 Downham Road, London, N1 5AA.

  1. Things-list

This week our studio was reveling in the intense heat of London’s week of summer – at last! – stocking up on Mars ice-cream bars by the dozen and sunning ourselves wherever possible. And yes, also giving out yards (Irish expression!) about transport disruptions that sunshine that the holiday smell of sunscreen made only mildly more bearable. We also had our Grads 2012 event, which was very exciting and filled with brilliant work and a fantastic mix of all sorts of talented people. In the meantime, we’ve received a massive variety of tremendous Things – five of which we showcase here in all their vibrant, fun-loving, map-addled glory. Enjoy!

  2. Things-list

This week at “Things” we’ve got Swiss climbing walls, various smells, antennae, and a beautiful selection of photographic work. As well as various interpretations of Bart Simpson’s face, because why not. Enjoy!

  3. Things-list

As you may know from the marvellous graduate work being showcased on It’s Nice That for the past two weeks (see in full The Graduates 2012 here), it’s that time of year again when we have amazing work blasting through our letterbox as creatives everywhere are breaking free from the shackles and security of student-hood.

  4. Things-list

It’s been another mighty week for Things – we’ve been getting all manner of delightful post arriving each morning at the It’s Nice That headquarters. This week we’ve been indulging in 1990’s stickerbook nostalgia, a bit of bike-spotting, a freaking awesome piece of self-promo, a beautiful publication on food aaaaand a very nice illustrated book involving reindeer and the Greenland landscape.

  5. Things-hero

This week, we got zillions of super-awesome Things in all shapes and sizes. They just kept on coming – seriously, the basket where we keep them is overflowing as I type. So it was a struggle to whittle it down to five, but we did it just for you and here they are, in all their glory!…

  6. Things-list

The weather this week has been a frenzy of unpredictability; now and then it looks like summer’s going to make a reappearance, and then the rain comes pouring down, slamming on the glass windows at the top of our studio and leaving a mountain of soaked umbrellas by the door. But at least – thanks to our wonderful contributors – we can always rely on Things to brighten up our day! Today, we’re looking at all sorts of publications showcasing beautiful illustrations, rom-com stills, the cool kids of Los Angeles, supercool layouts, aaaaaaand lessons on how to make our own beer and soap!

  7. Things-list

“Let me see that Thiiiing, I like it when the beat goes, like it when the beat gooooes […] that thing thing thing thing thing.” That Sisqo song was about Things right? Regardless, in his prime that man was a delight, as is this week’s wonderous Things. Euro 2012 manages to make another sneaky appearance, an intriguing analysis of archival material digs its way in, a furry and quirky album cover, a branding mag and a little slice of New York City in black and white form all come together in chorus of such unity and birdsong a musical tear is quavering (geddit?) on my cheek. So make haste and read as you’re then invited to try and remember other songs inspired by Things – a kareoke session will follow and just a heads up, Jimi’s Wild Thing will be my pièce de résistance…

  8. Things-list

Things has learnt something the hard way this week, and that is rotary fans can only do so much and air conditioning should be a legal requirement. But it’s cooling down now so while Things peels itself off of the white plastic lawn chair, like a melting Dali clock face, we have a Fruit Pastille lolly of wonderment, in five fruity layers of creativity. At the top we have a blackcurrenty tinged football-fixtures-laced newspaper, slurping our way down to an exhibition and paper catalogue both packed full of icy sweetness, a brief stop at a strawberry-filled children’s mag and ending the gastronomic process with a zesty flavoured film festival programme. And don’t forget to use the stick to point knowingly at everything you’ve just seen – now let’s get licking!

  9. Things-list

The sun casts a mysterious shadow on this week’s Things as colour-wise it’s not so much a tropical parrot, more a curious magpie. Fear not though because Things has become the lens to a wonderful, insightful camera with visuals reigning supreme and text taking a mini-break – it’s far too hot to actually read anyway. We’ve got photography, a lovely print, a compact little zine and even a map of our fine capital, so point and click at this beautiful array of Things. And if your eyes have had enough, give your ears a treat by downloading the third Studio Audience podcast.

  10. Things-list

Things is unintentionally feeling a bit British this week, acting like a tall glass of Pimm’s on a sunny afternoon. We’ve got the new issue of Granta giving it that infamous reddish tea stain colour, an illustrator providing the sprig of mint, and two creative newspapers giving that spicy gin-based zing. And not forgetting an exotic appearance from a Brazillian studio that becomes the juicy, tropical fruits that dress our heavenly cocktail of innovative imagination. So come on, it’s time to put down that milky cup of tea and take a big (responsible) swig of delicious Things!

  11. Things-list

Things is giddy because it’s the weekend so Things is feeling very playful indeed. It’s running madly through a field with a kite of dreams and tripping over long grasses of creativity along the way. Lighthearted, colourful publications, cheeky cards and even a children’s book are Things’ playmates this week and they’re all ready to get you in a footloose and fancy-free mood. And look, Things has just tagged you “It” so get chasing (reading), they’re waiting!

  12. List

What to do this weekend? Pay your bills on time, flame-throw the weeds in the garden, write letters of complaint to your favourite brands for freebies maybe… Instead of ticking everything off on your to-do list with smug proactivity how about doing nothing but indulging in the comfort of our own home this Bank Holiday weekend? Of course Things will be there to gently guide us into gluttony with food, babes and comics all comfortably slouching next to us on the sofa this week. So come on, put your pajamas back on, say “brb” to every human you know and relaaaaax…

  13. Things-list

Rain, rain go away and come again at sensible intervals so we can get out of this drought. But it’s Saturday now so it’s time to wash away the week with Things Shampoo, a squidge of revitalising goodness that will rid commuter grime and tame your tangled tresses of creativity. This week features several news-printed delights, a beautiful journal full of beautiful people with a sprinkling of Portuguese flavour to top it off. So lean back in that hairdresser’s chair of yours and lather, rinse, repeat (if you really must). And don’t forget to condition afterwards with our brand new podcast, Studio Audience posted earlier this week.

  14. Things-list

Things is as things does, so Things illustrates, photographs, posterises, prints and publicises, profanes and protests and I’m not sure when or why the illieration started but Things does that too. And it looks damn good when it does it.

  15. Thfront

It’s Easter so while we put the finishing flourishes on our Easter bonnets (ribbons are heavily present this year), we decided to unload our bountiful basket of Things. While inedible they’re definitely a feast for your eyes and this week there’s a right mix of goodies, so let’s get cracking!
