Beauty in the Making
Victoria House
April 2012

Beauty In the Making was an event celebrating creative artistry hosted by G F Smith in London in the spring of 2012. As part of the programme, It’s Nice That was invited to host a series of talks so every evening we asked some of the most interesting minds we know to come and give us a short, sharp dose of inspiration on any subject they wished, and at lunchtimes we hosted themed talks with a pair of speakers at each. The lunchtime events were…

The Maker – Legendary designer Alan Kitching and Beat 2012 director Kim Gehrig on the process of making. Time –
Featuring architecture and design critic Oliver Wainwright and creative researcher, artist and radio broadcaster Emma Gibson. Bespoke –
Vera Glahn from digital creative agency Field and the Science Museum’s inventor-in-residence Mark Champkins explored the subject of bespoke. Innovation –
Featuring innovative creative technical agency Made by Many and Massoud Hassani, designer of the revolutionary Minesweeper nominated for Designs of the Year 2012. The Senses –
Secret Cinema’s Fabien Riggall and culinary genii Bompas and Parr looked at immersive experiences that engage the senses.

For the evening 5×8 talks we were joined by Pentagram partner Angus Hyland, curator Barnie Page, KK Outlet curator Danielle Pender, gallerist Hannah Barry, James Groves of G F Smith, photographer Jane Stockdale, graphic artist Kate Moross, illustrator Mr Bingo, Maria Lisogorskaya of architecture collective Assemble, Dezeen founder Marcus Fairs, furniture designer Martino Gamper, Nicholas Burrows of Nous Vous, Nick Finney of NB Studio, Olivia Solon associate editor of Wired UK, illustrator Rose Blake, Sam Arthur founder of NoBrow, POKE co-founder Simon Waterfall, illustrator Supermundane and Teo Connor and Loren Platt founders of The W Project.
