First look at Baz Luhrmann’s new Netflix series The Get Down

A trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s new Netflix series, The Get Down has just been released. It’s the Australian director’s first TV show and is set in New York’s South Bronx in the late 70s just as hip hop is born.

Famous for his films including Moulin Rouge, Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby, Luhrmann’s music-heavy drama is billed as a “mythic saga of how New York at the brink of bankruptcy gave birth to hip hop, punk and disco,” and follows a group of teenagers shaking things up.

Lurhmann first had the idea for the show ten years ago and it’s named after an old funk term for the section of a record that makes people dance. In true Lurhmann style, the trailer showcases elaborate dance scenes that stitch together old and new music.

The director follows a slew of big Hollywood directors who are taking their talents to the small screen, such as Martin Scorsese who directed Boardwalk Empire’s pilot and Fight Club director David Fincher who was executive producer on House of Cards.

The trailer’s release comes at the same time Netflix announces it will be expanding into 130 more countries. The Get Down is expected to be aired in autumn 2016.
