Bob and Roberta Smith invites visitors to make work for his new show
Artist Bob & Roberta Smith is to open a new show in Basel. The Whole World Is An Art School! will open 3 February at von Bartha.
The exhibition will see the Basel-based gallery turned into an temporary art school. Visitors will play the role of art students, and will be actively encouraged by Bob & Roberta Smith to generate their own creative work in the gallery space.
Bob & Roberta Smith instructs the visitor-students to make “pink on pink” or “grey” paintings, “build your own blob” and “painting with both hands” using the tools and work space provided by von Bartha. The appearance of the exhibition will change over the duration as more visitors take heed of the artist’s commands and present their own Bob & Roberta Smith-inspired creative work in the space.
The visitor-generated work will sit alongside a series of pieces of discarded wood from Bob & Roberta Smith, painted with slogans such as “Make Art Not War” and “All Schools Should Be Art Schools”, reflecting on the role of art in society as a whole.
Bob & Roberta Smith is a pseudonym for British artist, musician, art education advocate and Royal Academician, Patrick Brill. Patrick’s work promotes art as a tool for democracy.
The Whole World Is An Art School! will run until 24 March 2018.
