Designer Faye Toogood has selected the line-up for Collect Open 2017, a satellite show alongside leading contemporary crafts fair Collect. The show is billed as a platform for “risk-taking”, concept-driven and experimental craft, showing makers who are not represented by a traditional gallery or those seeking to collaborate on new projects. The artworks will be developed specially for Collect Open 2017, responding to a brief to “experiment with scale and drama”.

The line-up features emerging and established artists including Fay McCaul and Kia Utzon-Frank, Claire Curneen, Shelley James, Silvia Weldenbach, Soojin Kang and Malene Hartmann Rasmussen.

Kia Utzon-Frank and Fay McCaul will be creating a prismatic, three-metre-long screen that will curve into the gallery space. Made from knitted cotton embedded with perspex rods covered in Dichroic film, the structure will change colour according to light and interaction from visitors.

Claire Curneen will build “one of [her] most ambitious works to date”, an installation of handmade porcelain figures. Fellow ceramic artist Malene Hartmann Rasmussen is developing a large-scale sculpture based around “trolls and the forest as a place of enchantment”.

Shelley James’ piece will combine dozens of 3D printed models to create a dodecahedron “to represent the universal principle of equalibrium”, lit by an interactive device being created by scientists at King’s College, London.

Collect takes place from 2-6 February 2017 at the Saatchi Gallery, London.
