D&AD has released its 2016 Annual, reimagined this year as the Manual, designed by Lucienne Roberts. Former D&AD president Andy Sandoz, who finished his tenure at the end of September, made the change as part of his future-facing message, stating this was “no dust-gathering ornament to last year. It’s a signpost to the next”.

The book is still a collection of the best design and advertising work from the past year, as chosen by the association, but this year also includes a series of interactive exercises in the book’s introduction. Created by research and strategy agency B&A, the exercises include questions and tasks based on lessons from members of the industry, such as The Partners’ Nick Eagleton and Somewhat’s Thea Frost, designed to be “read with a sharpened pencil and an open mind”. Empty boxes are left for readers to fill in their answers.

Graphic designer Lucienne Roberts was given the brief to “mess things up” and create something that could be written in. It has softback binding, thin paper stock and “a mass of delectable overprints alongside distortions of the CMYK process,” she says. “Less of a mess and more of a play.”

It uses the font FF Schulbuch Nord, chosen because “Schulbuch” means school book in German and the type design is based on the letterforms found in children’s books.

The front section, which includes the interactive exercises, is printed as a five-colour 24-page section with two fluorescents and three Pantone inks, with many combinations of tints and overprints creating secondary and tertiary colours. Andy Sandoz’ mantra, “win one, teach one” is emblazoned on the cover using some of these printing techniques.
