Tate Britain announces major Hockney retrospective in 2017

Date
22 February 2016

Tate Britain has announced it will stage the most extensive retrospective of David Hockney’s work to date in 2017. The exhibition will look at over six decades of Hockney’s work, including painting and drawing, as well as his prints, photography and videos. Organised in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou and The Metropolitan Museum, after London the show will move to Paris and New York.

From his days as a student in 1961 to his famous paintings of swimming pools in Los Angeles, the Yorkshire landscapes from the 2000s he most recently exhibited at the Royal Academy, and work made since returning to California in 2013, David Hockney will be presented in chronological order, and will open as Hockney approaches his 80th birthday.

Tate Britain’s director Alex Farquharson has said: “David Hockney is without doubt one of Britain’s greatest living artists. His impact on post-war art, and culture more generally, is inestimable, and this is a fantastic opportunity to see the full trajectory of his career to date.”

David Hockney will be on show at Tate Britain from 9 February until Monday 29 May 2017.
