The Design Museum has announced the four designers who will take part in this year’s Designers in Residence, which will coincide with the opening of its new Kensington building on 24 November 2016. Alix Bizet, Clementine Blakemore, Andrea de Chirico and Rain Wu will spend four months as Designers in Residence in the new John Pawson-designed building, exploring the theme of “Open”.

Alix is best known for her project Hair Matters, for which she used human hair as a fashion textile. She studied Fine Arts/Curation at La Sorbonnes, Paris, Product Design at Central St Martins and Social Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven, and her work combines these different disciplines.

Andrea is a designer working across product, graphics, interaction and system design, designing new production scenarios for everyday objects. He recently worked on Super Local, a group project where designers aimed to make items like a hair dryer and a lamp using materials and production facilities all found within a short bike ride. Also a graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven and Plymouth University, he is now a lecturer and researcher at the University of Bolzano, Italy.

Clementine is a London-based architectural designer who co-founded the non-profit collective Workshop architecture (WSa) and has completed two educational spaces for schools in India. She is also known for her outdoor classroom for a school in Buckinghamshire, which she designed as part of her RCA masters in architecture. For her residency she intends to continue looking at the potential in collaborative building processes.

Rain is a Taiwanese-born London-based architect who has worked at Carmody Groarke and Sou Fujimoto Architects. For her residency she wishes to find new ways to engage audiences and reimagine the exhibition format. She uses food as a device for storytelling, considering its importance to experience.

The annual Designers in Residence programme provides young designers the time and space to research and develop their work and practice, and a platform to connect with the industry and a public audience. Alumni include Asif Khan, Giles Miller, Bethan Laura Wood, Yuri Suzuki and Sarah van Gameren.
