Artist Gavin Turk unveils L’Age d’Or sculpture in London

Date

British artist Gavin Turk has unveiled his latest commission for Here East, an artwork titled L’Age d’Or. The artwork is an oversized painted door, disembodied from any room or structure, and references William Blake’s doors of perception and René Magritte’s painting La Victoire.

The title of the piece is a play on words, in French the meaning is “the golden age” but phonetically, in English, is simply “Large Door”. The work continues in the spirit of the artist’s previous commissions that include painted bronzes, waxworks and rubbish often presented with an irreverent message.

The work is installed outside Here East, which will include 22 artist studios that will available next year, in Queen Elizabeth Park, London. Gavin Poole, CEO at Here East said: ‘We are delighted to unveil this bold artwork by an internationally renowned local artist at Here East. This participatory public artwork fits perfectly with our vision for Here East as a major cultural and creative hub for London, and will greatly enrich the experience for visitors and for the creative businesses and individuals based on the site.”
