Getty awards $50k to five photojournalists in editorial photography grant

Getty Images has announced five recipients for its annual Grants for Editorial Photography programme, each of whom will receive $10,000 and editorial support from the company.

The winning photographers include: Sergey Ponomarev for Exodus, a project exploring the migrants and refugees of the Middle East and Africa, and Katie Orlinsky, for Chasing Winter, a series about climate change in Alaska. 

Mary Frances Calvert won for The Battle Within: Sexual Assault in America’s Military Part 2: The Survivors; Jonathan Torgovnik for The Hijacked Life of African Migrants in Johannesburg; and Kirsten Luce for her Border Security series, documenting America’s busiest corridor for human and drug trafficking in Texas.

In its 12th year, the award received 459 submissions from 75 countries and is the largest grant programme of its kind. On the judging panel was Sarah Leen, director of photography for National Geographic, Eli Reed from Magnum Photos and Time’s Paul Moakley.
