Joan Cornellá announces first solo exhibition in New York
Barcelona-based cartoonist Joan Cornellá is showcasing his dark and humourous works in New York, his first solo exhibition in the city.
The exhibition will take place at Josée Bienvenu Gallery, displaying work made specifically for the show, including canvas paintings, limited edition prints, as well as books and t-shirts. The illustrator will also be available to sign copies of his new book, SOT.
I think we all laugh at misery,” says Joan on his surreal and often shocking works. “We must start from the idea that when we laugh, we laugh at someone or something. With empathy or not, there is always some degree of cruelty. In spite of that, I am aware that if one of my cartoons happened in real life I would not laugh at all.”
Previous exhibitions of Joan’s have attracted an average of 15,000 visitors, with queues of up to a 4 hour wait. To avoid disappointment, the gallery suggest pre-booking admission. Joan Cornellá: A New York Solo Exhibition opens from 14 July to 30 July 2017 at Josée Bienvenu Gallery New York.
