Juergen Teller to curate Robert Mapplethorpe exhibition
German photographer Juergen Teller will curate an exhibition of Robert Mapplethorpe’s work, to coincide with what would have been the American photographer’s 70th birthday. Alison Jacques Gallery in London has invited Teller to select pieces from the entire archive of the Mapplethorpe Foundation.
“There are obvious parallels between these artists,” says Alison Jacques, who has represented Mappelthorpe’s estate in the UK for 17 years. “Provocative and subversive, making images which are the antithesis of conventional fashion photography and, most importantly, a key artist of his time, Juergen Teller was the only choice to curate this exhibition.”
The show takes place from 18 November — 7 January at Alison Jacques Gallery.
This follows the HBO documentary Robert Mapplethorpe: Look at the Pictures released earlier this year, exploring the extraordinary career of the controversial artist.
