Kodak set to relaunch the Super 8 camera

At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Kodak has revealed it will remake the Super 8 camera. As part of their Super 8 Revival Initiative, Kodak displayed an early prototype of a new camera that combines the classic features of the original but with added digital functionality.

Kodak plans to ship limited editions of the camera later this year for around $400-$750, with a less expensive model set to be released in 2017. The company recently celebrated 50 years of manufacturing Super 8 film, and the Revival Initiative aims to put the Super 8 camera into the hands of a “new generation of filmmakers as well as meeting the needs of top directors, indie filmmakers and others who appreciate filmmaking.”

The announcement has had major support from a whole host of big Hollywood names including Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg and Steve McQueen who said: “Super 8 taught me how to be a filmmaker, how precious an image can be… and ultimately how beautiful film is.”
