Slater Bradley: Factory Ikon

The visual arts programme for Manchester International Festival has been announced, including a major exhibition titled True Faith exploring the creative collaborations of New Order and Joy Division. The show will displays works created by artists, designers and filmmakers for the bands, including Peter Saville’s seminal cover designs, and videos and posters by John Baldessari and Lawrence Weiner.

Works such as Factory Ikon by Slater Bradley, Steel Harmony by Jeremy Deller, Dream English Kid 1964 – 1999 AD by Mark Leckey, and Painting for Ian Curtis (from Ornamental Despair) by Julian Schnabel will also be displayed, aiming to show “the wealth of visual art created in response to the bands’ heritage”. New Order will also perform at Manchester’s Old Granada Studios in shows created in collaboration with artist Liam Gillick.

MIF has also commissioned a film and performance work from artist Yael Bartana, called What if Women Ruled the World? The work will reimagines a famous scene from Stanley Kubrick’s Dr Strangelove where in a post-apocalyptic future, dominant male leaders are each allocated ten women to repopulate the earth. Yael’s piece sees the situation reversed, and each night a group of ten women and one man will be confronted with “some of the urgent crises of our time”. It will star a professional cast plus experts in science, politics and art.

Also on the line-up is artist Phil Collins, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Graham Eatough, Stephen Sutcliffe, Susan Hefuna and Samson Young.
