Michel Gondry directs Détour, a short for Apple shot entirely on iPhone

Director Michel Gondry, famous for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and countless music videos for the likes of The White Stripes and Bjork, has directed an 11 minute short for Apple. The film, titled Détour, was shot entirely on an iPhone 7 and follows the story of a red tricycle that gets lost as a family head away for a weekend. Think Homeward Bound, but with less talking animals and more emotive tricycle shots.

Shot in locations that were special to the director that he might not have been able to access with a full kit and crew, Détour is a touching and heartwarming film that pays homage to some of cinema’s finest films.

“When I used the iPhone, there were times when I wanted to give a more classical aesthetic. By imagining it was a 15 kilo camera I can only move slowly," explains Gondry in one of the six BTS films, giving an insight how he provided a “cinematic touch” to the film.
