Nando's unveils new identity inspired by its South African heritage

Peri Peri chicken behemoth Nando’s has launched a new visual identity designed by South African agency Sunshine Gun. According to Nando’s, the new aesthetic is “a fresh, bold, new look” and includes the PERi Red Pantone colour and a new typeface, DIN Next, dubbed Nando’s Hand.

The typeface was created alongside sign-writer and artist Marks Salimu, and is inspired by traditional South African sign designs. “DIN Next is the very same font used on road signs in Johannesburg, where the first restaurant was opened,” says Nando’s.

PERi Red takes the same colour as the African Bird’s Eye chilli grown in Mozambique, according to the brand. This is the key ingredient in Nando’s peri peri sauce.

Nando’s says the new identity draws on the brand’s South African heritage, with artists and designers from the country brought in to create new artworks.

‘PERi Red’, a unique new ‘Nando’s Hand’ typeface, bespoke artwork throughout as well as an 87 degree angle tilt in its headlines, a nod to its first restaurant opening in 1987.
