Peter Lindbergh and the Pirelli Calendar 2017 team

Photographer Peter Lindbergh is to shoot the Pirelli Calendar 2017. The 72-year-old German photographer and director has already collaborated with the Italian brand three times previously. In 1996 he shot the likes of Eva Herzigova and Carré Otis on the beaches of California; in 2002 he shot Brittany Murphy and Mena Suvari on the streets of Hollywood; and he worked on the 50th anniversary edition with Patrick Demarchelier, shooting Miranda Kerr and Helena Christensen.

The announcement might be considered a return to the old guard following last year’s edition by Annie Liebovitz, which took a more empowering stance on the tyre company’s well-known pin-up calendar. Liebovitz caused a stir with her empowering shots of women chosen for their successful careers rather than their bodies. The roster of 12 women included Amy Schumner, Yoko Ono, Patti Smith, Serena Williams and Yao Chen.

Lindbergh is one of the most recognised fashion and portrait photographers. In January 1990 he shot Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington and Tatjana Patitz together for the first time Vogue UK’s cover. His work is in the permanent collections of many international museums. He has also directed a number of critically acclaimed films and documentaries, including Inner Voices, which won the Best Documentary prize at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2000.
