It’s pretty astounding to learn that photographer Martin Parr has authored over sixty photography books since 1974. In celebration, Rocket Gallery are showing the books alongside a great little exhibition and you’ve got a couple more weeks to get there. Prolificacy defined.

Falmouth graduate Richard Marsden has got some interesting work. With a distinct documentary feel to it I’m a big fan of his Hot Tub series, pictured here.

Apologies for the lack of Things coverage so far this year but after the If You Could Collaborate exhibition we are currently in the process of moving studio. Excuses, excuses but after another busy week we’ve got a selection of the things that made their way into the studio and caught our eye. Among them some books, some diaries and a package from Tokyo we don’t know all that much about… (read more)

    Matthias Hoch

I used to have a studio in the Tea Building in Shoreditch where Rocket Gallery is based. This is where I first saw the work of German photographer Matthias Hoch. He has traveled all over the world photographing modern cityscapes, facades of buildings and urban landscapes devoid of people. There is often repetative patterns in his work which I find most interesting.

German photographer Mirko Martin has been shooting his L.A. Crash series since 2006. The 55 photographs (to date) are based on “the visual presence of catastrophes within the urban area of Los Angeles, with respect to how they appear within the actual cityscape as well as how they are created for the media.”

It’s not every day I come across someone with the same name. And when I do I’m obsessed with how the other Despina pronounces her name. In the past I have been called Desmond by friends’ parents and received post addressed to ‘Desiree’ and ‘Destiny’ Curtis. Neither of which I could do justice! But, in Greece it’s a little more common and all the better when they are as talented as the photographer Despina Spyrou. (read more)

I always feel as though the stylists and set designers are the unsung heros of the photoshoot. A set should be exactly that, a back-drop to the pieces in the photographs, and if done well, the ability to create this effortlessness is rarely put on the pedestal it deserves. So, Despina Curtis, set designer and stylist is our guest on the blog for the week, making sure her talents don’t go unnoticed.

    Mark Steinmetz

I own hundreds of photobooks, I am an addict. A recent acquisition is a beautifully printed book called Greater Atlanta by Mark Steinmetz. Mark’s images are incredibly beautiful, I’m quite in awe of his poetic vision.
Unfortunately his website (like most websites) doesn’t do the images justice. If you can still get your hands on a copy I would recommend this book. Wonderfully designed and beautifully printed by Nazarelli Press.

Taciturn Heart is not only a beautiful title, it is also full of beautiful content from the shutter of the one and only Marcelo Gomes. I’ll admit a soft spot for Marcelo’s work and was thrilled to hear a new opportunity to see his work on the printed page. ‘Taciturn’ is a flowery way of saying reserved in speech or uncommunicative, and I wish my breadth of vocabulary was a vast as to be able to sum something up so crisply. If You Could Collaborate has been open all week, and been received very well indeed. The exhibition however, only goes so far to explaining the full depth and scale of the twelve month project. So, here at It’s Nice That we’ve published and designed the accompanying catalogue charting all of the 33 projects, warts and all. Inside you’ll find behind the scenes photographs, sketches, interviews and final piece shots from some of the most prestigious names working in the creative industry today. (read more)

Jeff Ladd is a street photographer and dark room printer based in New York. As well as shooting sublime street images and printing for Elliott Erwitt, Jeff finds the time to write the most fascinating blog on photography books that you will find anywhere on the internet, as well as running his own photobook publishing company Errata Editions. Jeff’s laid back, down to earth and honest approach is addictive to read and some of his reviews are just sublime and always on the money. I am always sure to see what Ladd says before I buy blind from amazon.

    Extreme Instability

Mike Hollingshead has the same tenacity and obsessive streak that makes a good street photographer. However, Mike jumps in his car and chases storms. Far more dangerous and far more distance to travel than walking out of your front door and probably a far smaller hit rate.

Mike has been chasing storms for almost 11 years. We both started taking photography seriously at around the same time. I have no doubt that he is the best storm chaser in the world. His photographs are astonishing. Mike has good years and bad years but he keeps going at it, whatever the weather. I like that.

Really looking forward to making some time this week to go and spend some quality with a batch of new work from a photographer who needs no introduction. William Eggleston infused colour into the art photography world at a time when black and white was the accepted norm with seemingly banal, everyday objects as his subject. You’ve got until the end of February, so no excuses.
