Hans Lo

Guest Posting 13 - 17 July 2009

In his own words Hans Lo is “a cinephile who is passionate about making films”. Since graduating from Camberwell College of Arts last year, Hans regularly films workshops, live art installations and talks (including our very own talk series). He has also been commissioned by Cunning, Croydon Council, KK Outlet and Kate Moross to produce promotional videos, stop-frame animations and visual documentations.

As with some artists, Hans has a split personality to his practise. His uncompromising series of experimentations called The Black Project drew the attention of the London based psychedelic metal band Invasion who subsequently commissioned a viral video for their recent single. Since then Hans has been working on more music related projects including Simian Mobile Disco, Comanechi, The Count and Sinden and light show images for Ramesses.

A true professional, we are expecting big things from him, here’s a closer insight to him with the responses to our regular questions.

What have you got planned this week?

Trying to finish a 6 minute video for an awesome doom metal band, then summoning the nature gods in the New Forest on the weekend (aka camping).

What do your parents think you do?

Took them a long time to understand what I do now but they’re totally cool with it. As they get older, they take things easier.

Who do you look like?

Well according to my girlfriend I look like Pharell Williams; I love making stupid hand gestures from star trek, worked with Gwen Stefani and once decided to ask Lenny Kravitz to appear in one of my videos, Frontin’.
yeah right…

What’s your favourite sense?

Common. Not alot of people have this one nowadays.

Tell us something people don’t know about you…

I have a friendly-looking blue snow leopard on my chest.

Did your education count?

Not so far, haven’t been required to show my educational records for any freelance work. Although they should teach people how to be nice and reliable. If everyone had those grades listed in their CV’s then the universe would run alot calmer and more efficiently.

What word can’t you spell?

‘flourescent’, I think this spelling might still be wrong..wait let me run a spell check..oh yup..it’s wrong

Tell us a good fact

The blues singer Robert Johnson is rooted in the entire genre of Metal.

What’s Next?

Become a true master of video alchemy.

What’’s your ‘Plan B’?

Haven’t thought about that one. If what I do will fail miserably then I should quit now and dig myself a grave.

Harmony Korine is not my favourite film maker ever but he did a pretty heavy job on Gummo, especially with the soundtrack. ‘Dragonaut’ by the mighty ‘Sleep’ is used in this scene perfectly, it makes these scumbag cat-killing kids cruising on their bikes look BAD ASS!!

Häxan – ‘Witchcraft through the ages’, the first ever silent occult movie made in 1922. Black magic, grave robbing, torture, Satanic rituals, demons and witch hunting are just a few topics discussed in this informative visual ‘book’. There’s an alternate version narrated by William Burroughs which is on the dvd, worth a pop. Great film for any occult enthusiasts and families too!

Rory is my brother from a different mother and he has this metaphysical blog called ‘Eternal Truth’. It manifests itself in every particle of this cosmos with his unique transcendent visions of lo-fi images and euphoric sounds. Download his mixtape, it’s one hell of a ‘wondrous boat ride’.

Since the age of 8, I have always wanted to be like him. When I found this a few years back, I began to learn to speak like him. My goal to become ‘Douglas Quaid’ is definitely within my reach! (All i need is the body now…)
