Heydays
Guest Posting 7 - 11 September 2009
Heydays, based in Oslo was founded in 2008 by Mathias, Thomas, Lars, Stein and Martin who had all finished their education earlier that year together. Specialising in printed media, creative direction and graphic design they work on a wide range of projects including corporate identities, interactive websites, magazines, books and packaging. Heydays believes all work should be founded on a good fundamental idea, mixed with both function and aesthetics and judging by their first year they are doing just that. An exciting design studio certainly worth keeping an eye on.
Lars, Stein and Martin answered the questions.
What have you got planned this week?
L: Finish a profile for a photographer, then start designing a website for another photographer. Work on a profile for a IT company, and finish a profile for another IT company. Work on website and profile for clothing company.
What do your parents think you do?
L: My father is an author, so he’s quite interested in what I do with typography and book design.
S: They know pretty well what I do, but they may not be aware of my interest in paper smelling.
M: Exactly what I do, but my grandparents won’t get rid of the idea that I’m a fine artist.
Who do you look like?
L: Some years ago people said I look like Heikki Sorsa — a finnish snowboarder.
S: Jamaine Clement from Flight of the Conchords.
M: When I was 12 I looked exactly like my mom when she was about the same age. Must have been the mullet…
What’s your favourite sense?
L: Vision.
S: The sense of balance, movement, direction and acceleration (Vestibular sense).
Tell us something people don’t know about you…
L: I have never used Helvetica on any printed matter.
S: I don’t think when I play LetraMix. I just FEEL the letters.
Did your education count?
L: Yes. Our teacher stood hard on that all work should have a clever idea. That being said, most of the projects I remember from that time was done outside of school.
S: Absolutely! It’s where we met.
What word can’t you spell?
L: Receiving — I spell it recieving.
M: Challenge me, I’ll spell it all!
Tell us a good fact
L: The Okapi — although mostly resemblant to a zebra and horse, is the only living being related to the giraffe. And it’s our favorite animal.
What’s Next?
M: heydays.info v1.2
S: Beer.
What’s your ‘Plan B’?
L: Get rich doing something I don’t love.
M: I have no ‘Plan B’. I live from day to day trying to make the best of it. And that has been working out for the last 25 years.

The first time I saw Justin R. Saunders’ blog, the first thing I read is that “this will be your favourite blog.” Not far from the truth. It is strictly pictures, no text, no references. A sort of mood board of random images from printed matter, mens fashion, photography, art, architecture, graffiti, movie stills, gangsters, models and so on. It’s simple, yet rich, so I keep coming back to it.

Kristian Hammerstad

Kristian Hammerstad is an exceptionally talented illustrator (and animator) from Oslo, Norway. He went to school and worked in London a couple of years ago. His work combines morbidity, sensuality and pop-culture, drawn with an amazing detail, in a lowbrow style. He keeps surprising us for every new work we see.

An Art Service is a New York based company working with graphic design and art direction. We especially like their editorial design like ‘SUP MAGAZINE and 1948. They also seem to be working closely with some of our favorite artists like Dash Snow (R.I.P.) and Dan Colen etc. Which goes well with their company name.

We must admit we take a liking to graphic design companys who focus on branding. Danish Make® have lots of solid strategy and identity work for some of Denmarks biggest brands. They have quite recently updated with work for glassware producers Holmegaard. Go Danes!

Bjarne Bare is a polish born photographer living and working in Oslo. His pictures are from all over the world, and he has a keen eye for unforeseen observations and moods — the latest ones from Buenos Aires. He was born in 1985, but has already made a mark both as exhibitor and curator. I think he works strictly analog.
