Keetra Dean Dixon

Guest Posting 31 August - 4 September 2009

Keetra Dean Dixon is a designer and artist working under the handle FromKeetra. Her often frazzled NYC based workshop pushes its focus towards non-commissioned work, but occasionally finds the lure of a shiny client job too seductive to resist. Her work has been recognized on several fronts including a place in the permanent design collection at the SFMOMA, the choice for STEP magazine’s Emerging Talent ‘09, and the honorable ranking of ADC Young Gun ‘08. She has been featured in numerous publications, speaking engagements, and exhibits, most recently, feature articles in Etapes Magazine, works exhibited for the ‘09 U.S. Presidential Inauguration, and highlight pieces in several publications by Die Gestalten. Dixon’s first solo exhibit will open it’s doors in November 2009 in London’s Kessel Kramer Gallery KKOutlet.

Dixon developed many of her core objectives during her 2004 – 2006 masters studies at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has gained notoriety for its friendly, sincere absurdism. Her socially-themed objects & installations aim to involve the viewer as an active participant. The pieces create or exemplify heightened emotional moments and often rely on context or unique interactions to complete the work’s narrative. Keetra Dean was born in Anchorage, Alaska in 1977 and currently resides in NYC.

What have you got planned this week?

Too much, as usual. Adding to list of “To Do’s” – learn to say no and not feel guilty about it.

What do your parents think you do?

I have no idea. But I know what they wished I was doing – painting portraits with oils “like a real artist”. (Said in the kindest spirit)

Who do you look like?

My dog. She is a husky, boarder collie mutt with blue eyes. But it’s really our default expression that is similar. Its a kind of half dazed, half delighted look.

What’s your favourite sense?

I wish I could say sight – but it’s taste. I’m taste junkie. I never stop thinking about the next bite.

Tell us something people don’t know about you…

When I first wake up in the morning I can barley see despite having good vision. It takes about 10 minutes for the blur fog to clear. I bump into everything & make my breakfast by feel.

Did your education count?

Yes, every second – but I am not sure if those seconds counted more or less than all the other seconds of my life.

What word can’t you spell?

What word CAN I spell?

Tell us a good fact

The weight of the sky = 570,000,000,000,000 adult Indian elephants

What’s Next?

Good question – let me check my schedule …. AH - a Skype date with a dear friend. :)

What’’s your ‘Plan B’?

You think I have a plan?! Thank you, I am flattered.

You can’t beat a classic. Strip away the struggle and strife and there you have it, unending clouds. I like to let them scroll for a bit.

Inside the mind a resting place is an enormous carpet by Dutch artist Jennifer Tees. Aside from being a lovely object, the carpet is an illustration of Tees mental structure. The design contains the title of the piece rearranged into some sort of new mysterious instruction for ritual: it is a carpet to rest on.

I vote these Best Adult Rompers! I would be thrilled to try them out. And the motivating ideas are as fantastic as the final pieces. The avant-garde costume design is driven by the desire to create a …”immaginifica” and stunning form of poetry that does not utilise either words or “tales to narrate” but that originates from forms in movement on the scene. TRULY!
