Laura Bradley is Fashion Features Editor at SHOWstudio.com, Nick Knight’s fashion website. She is also founder and Editor-in-Chief of The Fashion Almanac. The inaugural printed issue for Spring/Summer 2008 featured contributions from an array of industry personalities including Jason Evans, Simon Foxton, Susannah Frankel, Pierre Hardy, Stephen Jones, M/M (Paris) and Peter Saville. Bradley contributes to a number of international publications such as Vogue Hommes Japan and has lectured at institutions including the ICA and the Design Museum.
What have you got planned this week?
A lot to cram in as next week I’m off to Glastonbury. Lots of meetings and preparatory work for our upcoming exhibition, ‘SHOWstudio: Fashion Revolution’ opening at Somerset House in September to coincide with the start of London Fashion Week. I’m doing a live interview with legendary PR Mandi Lennard on Friday afternoon as part of our new regular ‘In Fashion’ interview series.
What do your parents think you do?
Work too hard; spend far too much time on my laptop/iPhone; go to bed too late.
Who do you look like?
Today = Dark brown bob with fringe grey blazer Breton top black shorts black patent pumps Katsuyuki Yoshida for Comme des Garçons bag Vetiver by Le Labo
What’s your favourite sense?
Smell, without a doubt.
Tell us something people don’t know about you…
A lot of people forget I used to be blonde.
Did your education count?
Yes, my time at Central Saint Martins was invaluable. I didn’t appreciate it at the time but in retrospect I can see it has shaped who I am. My ‘education’ came from other areas too – mentors, living in London, my peers, my part-time job, my parents. My education didn’t stop when I graduated – I’m still learning new things everyday.
What word can’t you spell?
Anything I misspell once, I try my hardest to get it right the second time around.
Tell us a good fact.
In my magazine, The Fashion Almanac, everything was alphabeticised and nearly all of its components added up to a rounded number, e.g. 100 pages, 50 Curious Name Pronunciations, 10 Favourite Fashion Moments. I drew the line at word counts! It sent me crazy at some points but felt good to be working to such a strict system.
What’s Next?
2009 is a big year for SHOWstudio. We moved to our new Mayfair studio (the old Margiela shop on Bruton Place) and will be opening the ‘SHOWstudio SHOP’ at the beginning of July. As well as juggling numerous projects we are also deep into preparations for our upcoming major exhibition. I’m also keen to do a 2nd issue of The Fashion Almanac – I have lists and lists of ideas. There are never enough hours in the day.
What’s your ‘Plan B’?
I always quite liked the idea of being a florist. Although it would have to be a quality florist, stocking an abundance of Peonies.

Cathy Horyn's 'On The Runway'
- Guest posted by Laura Bradley 22 June 2009
Launched in January 2007 to mark the start of the Spring couture season, Cathy Horyn’s blog for The New York Times has attracted a dedicated community of followers. It serves as a fascinating accompaniment to her regular features as part of the paper’s traditional fashion coverage. The posts bear the linguistic marks that Horyn has become respected for – informative, structured, concise, loaded with expert opinion and nourished by close relationships with designers, but their success lies in their instantaneous nature. Often written before she constructs longer articles for the paper, the blogs are a compelling document of Horyn’s initial thoughts and ideas throughout the fashion calendar.

The Modern Pantry
- Guest posted by Laura Bradley 23 June 2009
The Modern Pantry is the culmination of culinary sophistication and architectural ambience that has become particular to this western fringe of East London. Located at the top of St. Johns Square, The Modern Pantry sits over the three floors of a perfectly proportioned Georgian town house overlooking a rich architectural enclave, medieval to mid-century. Headed by chef Anna Hansen (previously trained by Fergus Henderson of St. John Bread and Wine), the Pantry’s relaxed atmosphere, polite staff and ‘Small Plate’ options make this the perfect place for a quick working lunch, evening party, or dinner for two.

New Fashion Talent: Laura Mackness
- Guest posted by Laura Bradley 24 June 2009
Laura Mackness graduated from the Central Saint Martins MA Fashion course in February earlier this year, and has since received critical acclaim for her striking 26-piece collection showcased during London Fashion Week. A refreshing juxtaposition of minimalism and humour the collection promotes a streamline silhouette, a rigourous colour palette punctuated by unexpected details. A blazer jacket with loose lapels, structured tunic tops and a trompe l’oeil fur-print coat are complimented by Mackness’ flocked ‘eyelash’ necklace and cone-shaped hats. Window Boxes
- Guest posted by Laura Bradley 25 June 2009
There’s nothing more pleasurable than a window box, especially living in London where garden space comes at a premium. I have two, both wooden and painted in white gloss – a smaller one for flowers that sits flush to my kitchen window and a longer one below for a selection of herbs. I’ve just planted some Heliotropes (a hardy shrub with small, purple, fragrant flowers) and am planning a row of Geraniums in coming months; I have a strong disliking for Ivy. Columbia Road Flower Market has a great selection of reasonably priced plants and the Geffrye Museum’s Herb Garden is a fantastic source of inspiration.

When You're a Boy: Men's Fashion styled by Simon Foxton
- Guest posted by Laura Bradley 26 June 2009
Opening on 17 July at The Photographers’ Gallery ‘About a Boy’ will focus on the work of esteemed menswear stylist Simon Foxton and his collaborations with photographers including Nick Knight, Jason Evans and Alasdair McLellen. Curated by Professor Penny Martin, this will be the galleries first major exhibition to be held at its new venue. This refreshing celebration of a stylist respected for his vision and self-effacing nature will cement Foxton’s influence on fashion and promises to influence photographic exhibition curation.
