Meirion Pritchard

Guest Posting 11 - 15 May 2009

Following a BA in Graphic Design at Kingston University in 2001, Meirion veered into magazines and worked at Redwood publishing and on Harvey Nichols magazine. Sporadic stints followed on Richardson magazine in New York where he became the European Editor. In 2003, having improved his design and partying skills, he joined Wallpaper* and Tony Chambers’ team who were tasked with the magazine’s re-design.

In 2007 he became the Art Director of Wallpaper*, and continues to have the opportunity to work, meet and travel to some of the worlds most diverse talents and locations. Mixed around his Wallpaper* duties have been graphic projects with the first early issues of Kilimanjaro magazine with Loran Stosskopf, setting up club nights in the east end, and part managing and designing band identities for dibidim and Guillemots with Darren Bowles. More recently he’s been having fun tinkering with a music, illustration, film and animation club format called Show Off. Not to forget travelling to China with Wallpaper* to set up two pop up offices in Beijing and Shanghai respectively for their Made in China issue… With a CV as diverse and expansive as that his posts can’t fail to be something a little special.

What have you got planned this week?

First thing is to try to send all the pages to repro for Wallpaper’s first sex issue, so hopefully Peter and Nick’s section will be on time… Also I need to sort out the Show Off website, been learning a bit of Indexhibit, which has been very satisfying, gonna try and make it possible for people to buy the super James Joyce T shirts online.

What do your parents think you do?

Not 100% sure, but my mam does have a very well rehearsed few lines, explaining what I do to her friends etc. I think what they generally say is that I work on a magazine, but I don’t’ write the words, or take the pictures, but I sort of put it all together, which makes me sound like a binder, but isn’t too far from the truth!

Who do you look like?

A mash up of Stifler, Jack D, and David Coulthard.

What’s your favourite sense?

Common

Tell us something people don’t know about you…

Most people don’t realise I’m not Scandinavian and a quick glance at this mornings post, most people don’t know that I am neither a Miss, Ms, or Madame or Mrs! Haha!

Did your education count?

Yup, and it hasn’t finished yet. Once you stop learning its time to move on

What word can’t you spell?

Supercallifragalisticexpalladosis

Tell us a good fact

Apparently, 60% of the time, it works every time!

What’s Next?

After the Wallpaper* Sex extravaganza I might need some therapy, luckily its straight onto the Design Directory issue! The goal for the summer is to become a surf legend

What’’s your ‘Plan B’?

If I can’t be a surf legend, then perhaps, just being better than my friends Sunita and Clare would do (shouldn’t be too hard, ha!). Living on my own tropical island paradise, is always a good back up plan too!

    Li Wei

Here at Wallpaper* we have just finished our China special issue. It was created in China through two pop up offices in Beijing and Shanghai. It includes a shoot with Beijing artist Li Wei, involving cranes and suspending models on locations throughout Beijing. Li Wei combines performance art with photography to create seemingly impossible and fantastical realities as well as appearing in every shot. The images look so real that you question how they were made, especially with modern technology being used so frequently. They reminded me of Melvin Sokolsky’s pioneering Bubble series he shot for Harper’s Bazaar in Paris in 1963.

  • Pleix

Pleix are a French design and directing collective. And I initially became aware of their work through designer-animator-director Noah Harris who introduced me to Rob and Bart at Blink. I was looking for contributors to my club night called Show Off, and one of the things that instantly stood out was Birds, which was by Pleix. Able to turn their hands to anything from sumptuous live action, to insane CG, to illustration, (Genevieve Gauckliner is actually part of Pleix) their repertoire of work is constantly growing and evolving. Their site showcases a huge music video archive including work for Athlete, Basement Jaxx, the notorious “Get Down” video for Groove Armada.

    Ahonen & Lamberg

Ahonen & Lamberg are a Finnish design duo based in Paris. Anna Ahonen and Katariina Lamberg both studied at the same design university in Helsinki, Finland, but didn’t meet until they both ended up in Paris. In Spring 2006 they founded the studio and since then they have been doing art direction, graphic design and illustrations for various clients, such as Cerruti, EMI, Virgin, Uniqlo, Amnesty International, and in 2007 they co-founded a cross-cultural magazine, Dossier. The duo collaborated with Wallpaper* for our March 2009 fashion issue, producing a number of typographic title treatments based on redrawing A. M. Cassandre’s Bifur.

  • Philips de Pury: Photographs

Philips de Pury insists it is not an auction house but rather an ‘Art company’. In the last ten years it has taken the auction business into new areas, determined on pulling in a new audience with an emphasis on contemporary and ‘wet paint’ art and 20th and 21st century photography and design. • Chaumont Poster Festival

I stumbled upon the Festival International de l’affiche et des arts graphiques de Chaumont whilst actually in Berlin playing football for the globetrotting mish mash team of graphic designers: Dynamo Alstrasse (which for better or for worse includes some likely lads from GTF, Why Not Associates, North, Odd, Esquire and Wallpaper* to name a few). Hoping to get at least a bit of culture on my visit, I ducked out of the bar for a few hours and visited a bookstore called ProQm and found a thick ‘Swiss bound’ book full of brilliant poster art… (Read more)
