Neighbour

Guest Posting 10 - 14 August 2009

This week’s guest posts come from Dave Oscroft, designer and art director at Neighbour. The London based design agency works predominantly in fashion and music with clients including Levi’s, Dockers, NME, The Big Chill, HOVE Festival, Speed Communication, K Swiss and 3 Mobile. Constantly producing noteworthy work creating and developing brand identities and communications across all media.

What have you got planned this week?

This week we’re getting the next stage of our Levi’s Twisted Originals project into action and retouching images of TVs exploding for some NME TV ads.

What do your parents think you do?

My parents are quite well informed on what I do, probably due to the amount of money they’ve invested in education, art materials and macs over the years. My nan did once congratulate me on being ‘qualified’ as a designer when I graduated, which worried me slightly.

Who do you look like?

I used to fancy myself as a bit of a Fabrizio Moretti look alike before I had my hair cut. Looking back at the pictures of me, and him, I’m not so sure.

What’s your favourite sense?

Fear – it either makes you work faster or not at all. It’s also a good predecessor for relief.

Tell us something people don’t know about you…

I know Anglesey, the island off north Wales, like the back of my hand.

Did your education count?

Yes, massively, but formal education’s not for everyone; if you’re confident and have the right opportunites in front of you, get stuck in.

What word can’t you spell?

I’m always typing ‘teh’ instead of ‘the’ and ‘thansk’ instead of ‘thanks’

Tell us a good fact

The lyrics to Phil Collin’s ‘In The Air Tonight’ are not about him murdering his wife or watching his brother drown under some ice.

What’s Next?

Studio storage solutions.

What’’s your ‘Plan B’?

Bicycle courier, no question.

    Library of Congress

The Library of Congress is the largest library in the world and has recently migrated some of their image archives onto Flickr, which is much more user friendly than the official website. I could spend hours leafing through these sets, but ‘The 1930’s -1940’s In Colour ’ has been a particular favourite; intriguing subjects, saturated colours, and haunting landscapes.

    The High Line

The High Line is a 1.5 -mile section of the former elevated freight railroad of the West Side Line, in Chelsea, NYC. It was, up until very recently, overgrown with grass and weeds that sprang up through the tracks. It was captured beautifully in this set of images by Joel Sternfeld from a book entitled ‘Walking The High Line’ – published in 2002. The High Line re-opened in June this year as a public park, so check it out if you’re in the area.

    Maxime Büchi

A salute to an inspiring individual with very broad but focussed skill set. Maxime is many things: a graphic designer; a typographer with his own font foundry; the publisher of the mighty Sang Bleu tattoo journal; and now an apprentice tattoo artist with the legendary Filip Leu in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Keep up with him (if you can) at his tattoo blog, portfolio site, Flickr page, type foundry or at Sang Bleu itself.

    Dieter Rams Flickr Group

A celebration of the genius of the former head of design at Braun, Dieter Rams. Stylish, functional minimalism that any Apple fanboy could appreciate.
