Here’s the weekly round-up of things that have made it into the studio and added to the bookshelves, there are some great books of illustration and photography, a fake auction catalogue, a couple of t-shirts and a nice bit of self promotion. Have a good weekend.

Jules Spinatsch

Published by Kodoji Press, Edited by Marco Obrist
Stunningly simple layout and a nice couple of design details make this catalgoue on the work of photographer Jules Spinatsch feel very impressive indeed. A yellow-tinted plastic dust jacket that is mirrored by the tips of the pages make it an object of clarity and poise. The layout is digestible and moreish, and does a good job of showing off what is an impressively deep portfolio.

It Looks Like A Smile

By Geoff McFetridge, Published by Nieves Books
Nieves very rarely get it wrong with their publications and to see them team up with someone of Geoff’s calibre doesn’t leave much hope for the rest of us. A confidence of line and tone that Mr. McFetrdige has become synomymous with could not be more apparent. Throw a sweet little poem in at the end, “It looks like a smile / If you turn up both ends / Push on it hard / and eventually it bends” and you’re set for 16 pages of joy.

The Good Stuff

By Mother London
This is a first for us – I’m sure we’ve never been sent a faux auction catalogue compiled by a ficticious Panda called Vinnie, looking to get rid of objects from his somewhat tainted past before. But now we have, and it came courtesy of the hands and brains of advertising giants Mother London as promotion for Fox’s biscuits. Vinnie is the poster-panda of the campaign and the aim was to give his character a bit of background, and leaving the reader wondering what he’s been getting up to with a sawn off steel pipe and 33" chest freezer, that’s certainly been achieved.
