Alice Wietzel illustrates luscious ladies in new zine, Solarium

Alice Wietzel is a Paris-based illustrator with a penchant for printing. Currently in her last year of studying at L’École des Arts Décoratifs de Paris, she is concentrating on specialised printing techniques which shine in her new zine, Solarium.

Alice credits the work of illustrator Clay Hickson for helping her to discover riso printing, which she has begun using to print her own works while at school. Her interest in the printing technique also developed from an internship at Riso Presto, “when Sarah and Aurélien told me we would make a book together,” she explains. " Solarium is our baby, a tall A3 baby with five colour layers on every image and a lot of naked women getting sunburned as the day goes by with each page.” The result is a zine of pink hues, tan lines and blushed cheeks, carefully illustrated and printed delicately.

The presence of women in Alice’s publication is intentional. “I’m interested in the question of femininity and its representation, but also with nudity and our relationship towards our bodies,” the illustrator explains. “I am a spring and summer love, nostalgic of the hot sun, refreshing pools and luxuriant vegetation. It is why I keep drawing all of this stuff.”
