Cachetejack illustrates the benefits of yoga with humour and zest

After taking up yoga as a way to relax and get head space, Spanish illustration duo Cachetejack AKA Nuria Bellver and Raquel Fanjul decided to create a series of images to communicate their experiences. “Namaste is about the art of stretching and liberating your mind,” says Cachetejack. “Our images were based mostly on our personal experiences and talking with other friends who are also into yoga. We use yoga to calm our anxiety problems and also use other techniques to help us focus and be clear about our ideas.”

Using a punchy colour palette of yellow, green and red, these bright hues breathe life into the various poses and movements they’ve orchestrated their characters into. “We decided we wanted something that provides light and energy but also a calmness as we believe the colours are connected with the feelings you get during and after the class.” There’s a tongue-in-cheek tone to the whole series and it’s great to see Cachetejack approach the series with a sense of humour that’s so universally understood, regardless of whether you’re a yogi or not.

Working on the project gave Cachetejack the “calm and order” the pair crave in every aspect of their practice. On the duo’s process, Cachetejack talk and brainstorm ideas and then proceed onto fast pencil sketches, eventually transforming those into digital drawings. “In this series we wanted to introduce typography into our drawings as we wanted them to feel almost like emojis,” says Cachetejack. “Nowadays emojis are a great way to express big ideas so we wanted to approach yoga in a similar way.” The typographic elements take the form of motivational phrases that accompany the fleshy forms, making the images even more impactful.
