Daria Tessler's bizarre screenprints are out of this world

Date

Daria Tessler’s work is nothing if not weird. Using a combination of paint, pen and ink, Daria creates impressively detailed silkscreened scenes which together make up an alternate universe under the name Animalsleepstories. Mashing 60s and 70s inspired patterns and colours with slightly sinister folkloric elements, the artist depicts rooms, archeological ruins and whole towns floating galaxies filled with clouds and spotted with stars. Daria’s universe is populated by creatures which vary from mechanical looking tin-man robots to Studio Ghibli-esque totems and enormous scaly water snakes.

Daria’s pen drawings may be exacting, but her work is made more complex by the addition of paint, sometimes in larger brushstrokes, sometimes in tens of tiny dots, layered over bled and blotted ink backgrounds to create multi-layered artworks and illustrations.

The Finnish born artist grew up in LA, and now lives in Portland, Oregon, where she regularly shows her work.
