Friday Mixtape: a collection of bangers from Spanish band Hinds

This week’s Friday Mixtape comes from the always smiling Madrid-based group, Hinds! With a reputation for the most joyfully infectious live shows, Carlotta, Ana, Ade and Amber’s mixtape is a collection of indie focused bangers, with a few Spanish hits thrown in for good measure.

Hinds released their second full album, I Don’t Run at the beginning of April and will be touring this summer, kickstarting things off at Primavera at the end of the month — make sure to catch them.

Why have you picked these songs, what do they remind you of or make you feel?

Last night it was Ade’s bday and we were for like three hours playing music and drinking beer and tequila in the parking lot of the venue after the show. These were the songs that made us lose our voices. It’s a strange mix, but it represents what it was like haha.

When or where should this mixtape be listened to?

What song or album did you listen to as a teenagers and why?

Green day. That was our way into rock and roll haha.

What kind of posters did you have on your bedroom walls?

Busted, Arctic Monkeys, Mick Jagger, King Tuff, Rebelde Way, Bob Dylan, The Doors, Lou Reed, Bob Marley… a good mix haha.

Can you tell us a little about your new record and the artwork too?

It’s our favourite Hinds record so far, we’re really proud of it. All the songs are the mixture of feelings you get when love ends, they all come from our own experiences that we’ve had during this last year and a half of touring. Which are so many and pretty deep.. haha. When we wrote the first album we were touring all the time and doing everything on a rush, after two years of touring non stop we’ve learned a lot about ourselves and about what like and how to make that happen. I Don’t Run is the perfect description of Hinds in every way.

The artwork was all done by us and the pictures were all taken by Neelam Kham Vela. The artwork of our records is very very important to us and we always take it very seriously. Our idea for this second record was to reflect the attitude of the songs in the artwork too. So when we were taking the pictures we wanted to look calm and mature, which is the way we feel about this album.

If a feature film about Hinds was to be made, what song would be on the trailer and why?

Spanish Bombs by The Clash. It’s one of our favourite songs, we’re even thinking about covering it at some point. Also, it represents the punk rock movement and it talks about Spain, so perfect haah.
