Photography: Katie Miller on sun, sky, landscape, and the backs of heads (some NSFW)

Date
24 April 2014

Remember shooting your first roll of film as an enthusiastic and slightly precocious six year-old on a sticky disposable camera? I do – and the film was dominated by the backs of people’s heads. I was devastated that I hadn’t created a collection of immaculate and traditional family portraits, of course, but little did I realise back then that the backs can be just as beautiful.

Photographer Katie Miller’s photographic portfolio is dominated by shots of the backs of her subjects’ heads, but unlike my tender failed attempt, her unique combination of composition, colour and exceedingly shiny hair allows her to make them seem even more intriguing and appealing than the fronts of them. It might have something to do with her inimitable hunch for beautiful locations, too, not to mention the expanse of blue sky and the nudity which occasionally punctuates her series. Either way, this is a collection possessing a seductive quality that few photographers ever manage to wangle.
