Illustrator Maria Midttun's magic carpets

Date
9 February 2017

Norwegian born, London-based illustrator Maria Midttun clearly has a fascination for patterns. Her work is filled to the brim with squares: the bricks of houses, bathroom tiles, tartan checks.

Maria is something of a self-publishing enthusiast with a pile of zines including Jupiter, Black Rainbow, Tiles, Staying Safe and Citadel already under her belt. But it was the naively executed Magic Carpet Ride that caught our attention. Despite its mystical name, the zine is built of a charmingly paired-back collection of navy and pink-hued images of rugs with Maria’s hand clearly visible across each artwork.

Maria graduated with a BA in illustration from the Arts University, Bournemouth back in 2012. She continues to return to her old university as a visiting tutor.
