Natalia Stuyk is a video and digital artist who creates surreal, warping imagery in vivid saturated colours. Her commercial work often sees her collaborate with brands such as Kenzo, Nike and Stella McCartney, making fashion films, music videos and everything in between. Much more at home in the digital space, Natalia spoke at Nicer Tuesdays about her recent move into the physical space, collaborating on installations for Galeria Melissa in New York over the coming summer.
“The brief was to somehow materialise my videos into real-life structures. I’ve always thought about this but I had no idea how to do it,” she said.
“I use a lot of reflective materials in my videos and a lot of digital imagery that hints at something super-real and tangible but heightened and saturated,” she explained. “None of it exists in a definable space, it’s floating in the middle of nowhere.” So her challenge, she explains, was to translate this aesthetic into real structures that could inhabit the gallery/store.
“I’m not used to the constraints of real-life objects or tangible material. So this was a whole new approach.”
Here, Natalia takes us through this experimental process, that saw her practice take an entirely new direction.
