“Incredibly prolific but relatively unknown”: Olivia Ahmad on illustrator Jo Brocklehurst

As curator at London gallery the House of Illustration, founded by Quentin Blake, Olivia Ahmad stages exhibitions about illustration and its impact. Its recent show focused on Jo Brocklehurst, a “prolific but relatively unknown” artist that Olivia dubbed the “chronicler of club culture”.

At Nicer Tuesdays, Olivia told the fascinating story of Jo’s career and the subjects she chose to capture, from punks to fetish club attendees. She also gave insight to the unique personality of the illustrator, who attended Central St Martins aged 14, brought her art supplies to clubs in a shopping trolley, and used UV paint to create works in the dark.
