Meet the speakers: Dougal Wilson, Ewen Spencer, GraphicDesign& and Gal-dem

This month’s Nicer Tuesdays at Oval Space will go behind the scenes of the Channel 4 idents, travel back in time to teenage nights out, look at how graphic design can save our lives, and explore the vital and exciting publishing work of an empowering collective.

Ahead of the event next week we have a very brief chat with the speakers about what we can expect from their talks.

Please note this event is now sold out – sign up to the newsletter to be the first to know about future events.

Whether you’re perplexed, intrigued, or simply indifferent and completely uninterested in the new idents for Channel 4 (the bits that go between the shows telling you what channel you’re watching), I will be explaining how and why they came about.

What aspect will people not be expecting to hear?

Attendees may not be expecting to hear quite how lo-fi and ineptly unprofessional their technical preparation was.

What’s the one aspect of the project you can’t wait to tell the audience more about?

I can’t wait to tell them how lo-fi and ineptly unprofessional their technical preparation was.

Charlie Brinkhurst-Cuff and Chani Wisdom from Gal-dem

Charlie: Our talk will be about the second print edition of Gal-dem, a magazine and creative collective set up in 2015 to elevate the voices of women of colour within a media/creative industry that marginalises us.

Chani: This issue explores the concept of “home” in depth.

From the project you’re talking about, what aspect will people not be expecting to hear?

Charlie: Gal-dem print edition, much like the rest of what we do, was produced on an almost completely voluntary basis. Because of the professionalism of our contributors, editors, illustrators and designers, I don’t think you would guess.

Chani: Compared to last year, it features a lot more artwork and illustrations!

What’s the one aspect you can’t wait to tell the audience more about?

Charlie: We’re looking forward to detailing some of the articles that were published in the print edition this year, both from an editorial and design perspective. The magazine includes interviews with stars like Ray BLK and Corinne Bailey Rae, but also has serious pieces on Grenfell and feminism, plus photography and illustrations.

Chani: There is something for everyone in “homecoming,” its content is extremely diverse.
