Friday Mixtape: Simon Landrein's mix of comfortably melancholic songs

This week’s Friday Mixtape is by French illustrator and animator Simon Landrein, a master of humour and filling a square format with the best kind of weird satire. Simon’s mix is an eclectic mix of genres from bands from Wire to Dean Blunt and France Gall, so there’s a little something for everyone.

I’ve picked these as they feel like a comfortable melancholia, songs for a sweet loneliness.

When or where should this mixtape be listened to?

When you’ve overslept on your way home.

Are there certain albums you listen to during the different parts of your creative process?

I don’t have a specific album, but lately I’ve been listening to a lot of French hip hop while working, it has a great range of styles that you easily spend the day tumbling from one album to another.

What records did you listen to when you were a teenager?

I was listening to a lot of different things but here are the albums I washed my ears with in my teens:

Princes de la ville by 113, Pulp Fiction OST, Toxicity by System of a Down, and Houlala 2 la mission by Ludwig von 88.

If a feature film about your life was to be made, what song would be on the trailer and why?

It’s hard to say, but maybe this mix would be perfect for a trailer.
