Explore London’s diverse music scene through film, graphic design and photography sessions with Apple

Date
12 June 2018

To celebrate and shine a light on London’s diverse music scene, Apple are putting on a series of creative workshop sessions and special performances this June at its UK flagship store on Regent Street, London. Titled Sounds Like London the series features a schedule of curated, hands-on workshops across film, photography and graphic design.

Those running the wide range of events — sixteen sessions in total — include key industry creatives like grime photographer Vicky Grout, music-focussed filmmaker Raine Allen Miller and graphic designer Ben Arfur. There will also be an opportunity to explore the creative side of everyone’s favourite summer events (festivals!) with the co-founders of Bestival itself, Rob and Josie da Bank. The duo will be sharing their unique approach to staging and promoting one of the UK’s most colourful and eye-catching festivals with an interactive workshop.

Sounds Like London will present an exclusive Film Lab session on June 18 with director Raine Allen Miller, who has worked with clients such as Nike x Riposte, ASOS and Storm. During the workshop, Raine will share her career trajectory from illustrator to director and let the audience in on how she pulls together her varied skills base, emotions and passions to create her films. Those attending the session will have the opportunity to use the Apple Pencil and an iPad to generate a visual response to a track, which can then be used to storyboard a music video.

Following on from Film Lab with Raine, there will be a Live Art workshop on June 25, with prolific record sleeve and poster designer, Ben Arfur. The graphic designer will share the specific techniques and influences of his signature style — such as illustration and digitally altering imagery to push the boundaries of traditional photography. Ben will talk through his varied approach to creating an album cover, then provide the audience with assets, an artist and album titles they can use to create their own album art cover.

On June 27, celebrated grime music photographer Vicky Grout will be sharing her photography career journey and the parallels it has found in the rise of grime music and the grime events she’s photographed. Then, Vicky will be sharing tips on creating candid, street-style portrait images using the iPhone X influenced by her signature style, inviting attendees to head out and create their own shots to share on Apple’s video wall.
