Tacita Dean: FILM

Date
11 October 2011

Tacita Dean’s silent 35mm FILM opened in the Tate Modern’s iconic Turbine Hall yesterday and so far the response has been overwhelmingly positive, with five stars from both The Guardian and The Independent – who describe it variously as “an homage”, “a requiem” and “a tremendously moving exhortation” to the medium. Meanwhile The Telegraph applauds a “successful attempt to grapple with the impossible space” and The Evening Standard calls it "one of the greats” of the Unilever series which included Ai Wei Wei’s sunflower seeds and Doris Salcedo’s crack in the floor.

The 11 metre high projection is meant to showcase her beloved medium of film in all its tactile, imperfect glory and she hopes it will cause people to rethink the headlong dash to digital which has put film in danger of becoming anachronistic. It really is a case, she believes, of us not knowing what we have got til it’s gone.

The installation runs until March next year.
