We like to think of ourselves as debonair international men/women of mystery types, for whom cosmopolitan is a philosophy as well as a cocktail. And on dreary days like today we can live out that ambition to the full by way of a brilliant exhibition of Japanese design on show in Germany. The Gestalten space is currently hosting the Tokyo Art Directors Club Award: The Best of Japanese Communication Design bringing a bounty of beautiful work to Berlin and it’s a treasure trove of far eastern talent.
Now in its 60th year, the prestigious award has 75 top art directors on its jury and celebrates the very best broadcast advertising, interactive media, graphic design, editorial design, packaging, photography, and illustration. The act of bringing it to Europe is a justified boast about the state of the Japanese design scene and a window into a visual world many may not be familiar with.
