Beyond Dementia exhibition features artworks and curation by people with the condition
Dementia has dominated the UK news agenda over the past couple of weeks, with Teresa May reversing her so-called manifesto “dementia tax” plan and, last week, the BBC publishing news of a study which looked at nine lifestyle changes which could lessen your risk of dementia.
This afternoon, the University of Manchester’s Whitworth has announced the launch of a Collection Centre exhibition which looks at “how to live well after a diagnosis of dementia”. Opening 28 July, and curated by Manchester-based Fabulous Forgetful Friends, a collective of people living dementia brought together by not-for-profit organisation Together Dementia Support, the exhibition titled Beyond Dementia considers “the lived experience of dementia, looking beyond the condition and highlighting the positives”. Together, Fabulous Forgetful Friends hope to take on misunderstandings on dementia.
“When we speak of dementia we often speak of loss: the loss of memory, the decline in physical functioning, and the progressive loss of self,” a press release states. “This view can lead to a further and more problematic loss, the loss of voice, as the stories of people living with dementia are too often ignored. Beyond Dementia is a ground-breaking exhibition that brings together the words and stories of a group of people living with dementia along with artworks they have produced and a display they have curated from the Whitworth’s art collection.”
Beyond Dementia will feature artist workshops, screenings, talks, and mindfulness for carers sessions.
