Antony Gormley unveils life-sized sculpture

Turner Prize-winning artist Antony Gormley has unveiled a life-sized sculpture installation from his latest series Another Time on Margate’s coastline.

“I wish to celebrate the still and silent nature of sculpture. Another Time…is necessarily isolated, and is an attempt to bear witness to what it is like to be alive and alone in space and time,” says Antony.

Most famous for his Angel of the North sculpture, the artist has developed this series titled Another Time which includes 100 solid cast iron figures presented across the UK and other parts of the world.

His latest cast iron sculpture has been installed on the chalk bed in front of the Turner Contemporary in Margate, where it will remain until 5 November as part of the summer season at the gallery. A pair of figures have also been placed on the shoreline of Folkestone as part of the Triennial.

The Folkestone installation, which includes a pair of life-sized figures placed on the shoreline, represents “national significance” and will also be in place until 5 November. The site in Margate is part of Thanet’s coastal path which is the longest in the UK; at high tide the sculpture is completely submerged beneath the sea. At low tide, it’s visible from the Turner Contemporary.

The figures in his latest series are identical to the sculptures from Another Place (2007), which is permanently positioned at Crosby Beach in Liverpool. The only point of difference between the two is that Another Place faces the horizon while those in Another Time all have different orientations.

“We are thrilled to feature Antony Gormley’s sculpture as part of our summer season at Turner Contemporary. Stepping beyond the walls of the gallery and siting artworks in outdoor spaces is both hugely exciting and logistically complex. After months of work behind the scenes, it’s brilliant to see the installation work begin. A celebration of our extraordinary views of the North Sea – it will undoubtedly capture imaginations,” says Sarah Martin, head of exhibitions at Turner Contemporary.

Another Time is organised by Turner Contemporary in partnership with Folkestone Triennial 2017 and is available to view from 2 September – 5 November 2017.
