Bridget Riley shares recent work in new London exhibition

Date

Bridget Riley has a new exhibition at David Zwirner’s Grafton Street location, sharing recent work from the last four years titled, Bridget Riley Recent Paintings 2014-2017.

The show will take over the three floors of the exhibition space, spanning wall paintings and works on canvas. Alongside these new works is also a series of studies concentrating on themes of works in black and white and the disc shape, both extending and reworking “the artist’s previous investigations of these motifs in new ways,” says the gallery.

Bridget Riley is continually praised for her abstract, repetitive compositions which “yield a singular sense of visual pleasure for the viewer”. Her use of geometric shapes is a practice she has “focused exclusively on” since 1961, originally in black and white before introducing colour in 1967. Additionally, Bridget Riley Recent Paintings 2014 — 2017 marks the first time the artist “has returned to using an achromatic palette” since her earlier work in the 1960s. Revisiting previous concepts and ideas is a regular practice of Bridget Riley’s, explaining in The Eye’s Mind: Bridget Riley, Collected Writings 1965 – 2009: “I am sometimes asked ‘What is your objective’ and this I cannot truthfully answer. I work ‘from’ something rather than ‘towards’ something. It’s a process of discovery.”

Bridget Riley Recent Paintings 2014 – 2017 is the British artist’s third with David Zwirner gallery after Bridget Riley: The Stripe Paintings 1961 – 2014 when she joined the gallery in 2014, and a “career spanning survey” in New York in 2015. The exhibition opens 19 January and will run until 10 March 2018. A new monograph on the artist is also to be released on the gallery’s publishing imprint, David Zwirner Books.
