Fotografiska to open 89,000 sq ft photography gallery in Whitechapel

Whitechapel in London’s Tower Hamlets borough is to become the new home of the capital’s “largest permanent dedicated photography gallery”.

Fotografiska will span 89,000 square feet, a space so vast that the gallery will be able to host up to seven exhibitions at once. Visitors will be able to visit all exhibitions on display by using one single ticket. In this way, Fotografiska London apes the model of its Stockholm predecessor which is one of the city’s most visited attractions seven years after opening.

The London gallery will house exhibitions from established photographers (Fotografiska Stockholm has hosted solo shows from the likes of David LaChapelle, Annie Leibovitz, Bill Brandt, Helmut Newton, Sally Mann, Irving Penn and Andres Serrano), as well as group shows, series commissioned by the gallery exploring current events, and work from nascent photographers.

Fotografiska will offer a worldwide membership programme offering unlimited access to its galleries worldwide.

The building is due to open to the public in November 2018. It will include two restaurants, a cafe and a bar.
