Matt Lambert for Grindr: Home

Gay dating app Grindr has produced and published its first book, called Home, by photographer and filmmaker Matt Lambert. In the publication, the Berlin-based, LA-born Matt explores “intimacy and youth, focused on LGBTQ narratives”. Home was art directed and designed by Studio Yukiko.

Grindr commissioned the book to explore the role of “safe spaces, both physical and virtual, in the development of LGBTQ+ identity”, it explains. “In the wake of the Orlando massacre, with the vitriol of the 2016 US Presidential Election, and in a world where more than 75 countries still criminalise being gay, LGBTQ rights are in a precarious position.

“[We] commissioned this book to help us all answer the question of where we find ourselves again.”

In Home, Matt Lambert set out to investigate “the exclusiveness of gay culture”, looking at “safe spaces” of the 70s and 80s up to the current culture of online dating and apps like Grindr. He presents photographic portraits of young gay men “captured during moments of uninhibited expression and casual intimacy,” and documents conversations with young gay men on “discovering their sexuality via these present day resources”.

He travelled to Toronto, Paris, London, Prague, New York, Los Angeles and Berlin and used digital platforms and social media channels to cast for the book.

Matt is a regular contributor to Document Journal, Dazed, Paper, Wonderland and 10 Magazine, and was named by the Tribeca Film Festival as one of ten filmmakers of the future. He has also worked with Givenchy, Hercules and Love Affair, BBC, Gucci, Channel 4 and Vogue.

The 102-page book is published by Grindr Imprints, LA, with a foreword Bruce LaBruce. It is available for pre-order from the Grindr store and published 3 January 2017.
