idle women behind new UK “floating arts centre”

Date
30 November 2015

Arts organisation idle women is set to launch a floating arts centre to tour the waterways of north west England between 2016 and 2017. The piece, idle women (on the water) takes the form of a converted cargo narrowboat, and aims to partner with local women’s organisations and work with women in the north west on contemporary arts projects. The boat will host seven artist residences during its tenure, starting with muf architecture/art. The practice will be working with local women on the design and build of the boat, set to launch in March next year in Blackburn. The other artists include Karen Mirza and Mojisola Adebayo, and all artists-in-residence will live and work on the narrowboat as it tours canalside places such as Blackburn, Burnley, Dewsbury and St. Helen’s.

idle women was founded in 2015 by Rachel Anderson, formerly a producer at Artangel, and performance maker and lighting designer Cis O’Boyle. The floating arts centre project is supported by the Arts Council.
