Each year in the birth place of Ikea – a small town called Älmut in Sweden – the design giant holds its Democratic Design Days event. Naturally the event attracted a host of design journalists, but, democratically it was also live streamed on the Ikea Today website for everyone at home to see.

Ikea came through with a host of exciting collaborations that the mega-brand has in the works. From Lego to Adidas and Solange Knowles, the diversity and big name game changers highlight Ikea’s thoroughly on-point approach to exploring the boundary pushing possibilities of design.

First up is Saint Heron, Solange Knowles’ multidisciplinary cultural hub with a focus on “building the community we wish to exist” through music, visual art and performance art mediums. Of the collaboration with Ikea, Saint Heron has commented they are “excited to announce an upcoming creative collaboration with Ikea, exploring architectural and design objects with multifunctional use,” adding, “we’re excited to continue to push conversations and boundaries even further with our upcoming collaboration with Ikea.”

Head of design at Ikea, Marcus Engman, began the big Lego reveal by explaining “the people of the future are kids” and with the Swedish brand’s ethos of embracing the people of the future, its collaboration with the beloved Danish toy company feels like a no brainer.

With Adidas, Ikea is looking to explore exercise and sports within the home, while Olafur Eliasson will launch a sustainable living collaboration with the brand in relation to his Little Sun Foundation which brings solar-powered energy to communities without electricity.

Back to music, Marcus presented Frekvens, a portable speaker and light system by Teenage Engineering, a Stockholm-based electronics company, stating “Ikea is furniture, meatballs and soon… party!”
